Park City after Sundance 2027: what is officially announced vs. what is still rumor

If you own — or are about to own — on or just off Historic Main Street, January used to mean hard closures, Festival parking rates, and Special Event Access Passes. That operating picture has changed. Park City after Sundance 2027 starts with one official fact: the Festival left. A lot of what you will hear next is not.

It has not authorized a price forecast, a replacement film festival, or a claim that the Sundance Institute itself packed up and left Utah. Here is what has actually been announced.

What actually stuck on the calendar

Last Park City Festival: Thursday, January 22–Sunday, February 1, 2026, per the city’s 2026 Sundance Community Guide and the Institute’s own 2025 release. That was the last edition here.

Boulder debut: January 21–31, 2027, posted on sundance.org February 24, 2026. Boulder is the Festival’s home “beginning in 2027 and beyond.” Named theaters are Boulder venues. That is proof the calendar moved — not a Boulder travel sidebar. Confirm sundance.org before you plan January around either date.

Park City’s FY27 budget (fiscal year that began July 1, 2026) is the city’s first without hosting. The City Manager’s message is blunt: “This year also marks our first without hosting the Sundance Film Festival.” Resources once dedicated to public safety, transportation, and event management during the Festival “have been reinvested in broader community services and year-round priorities.”

The March 27, 2025 Institute announcement named Boulder after an RFI/RFP process. Finalists: Boulder, Cincinnati, and Salt Lake City. Robert Redford, then Institute President and Founder, thanked Park City and the state of Utah. The same release states the Institute “is based in Utah,” founded in 1981. Park City had contracted to host through 2026 — the October 2013 municipal contract background is the city’s own paper on that window.

If you see “beginning in 2028” in an older local recap, ignore it. Official Institute pages say 2027.

The Institute did not leave. The Festival did.

Festival ≠ Institute.

Amy Redford, Institute trustee, told the Park Record on January 22, 2026 that the 2027 Festival is the only part of the nonprofit moving to Boulder.

Ilyse McKimmie, deputy director of the Feature Film Program, told the Park Record on March 17, 2026 that the Screenwriters Lab will continue at Sundance Mountain Resort, which she called the “ancestral home” of the Institute and Festival. The Directors Lab returns to Sundance Mountain Resort in 2027 after meeting at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park in 2024 during resort construction. Michelle Satter, in a February 3, 2026 Park Record piece, put it the same way: labs stay in Utah at the Sundance Resort.

If you bought a Park City address partly for the January film calendar, the verified local remainder is Institute labs at Sundance Mountain Resort and Park City Film’s year-round library screenings — not a rumor that “Sundance is still here in some form.”

What January 2027 actually has on the calendar

There is no announced replacement film festival.

KPCW reported March 31, 2026 that Shaun White’s Snow League is booked at Park City Mountain January 22–24, 2027. Mayor Ryan Dickey and Chamber CEO Jennifer Wesselhoff attended the announcement. As Snow League enters its second season, it has committed to one year of competition in Park City. Councilmember Tana Toly said on the record that Snow League does not replace the arts-and-culture element of Sundance. Confirm Park City Mountain before you plan around those dates.

That is a sports weekend on the old Festival calendar. It is not a municipal “Sundance replacement.”

Park City Film, per KPCW in January 2026, is making the library its year-round home and expanded its lease to add 70 more screenings at Jim Santy Auditorium. Later coverage described genre-based festivals and an annual festival in October — still not a January clone. City and county councils had voted to adopt a 124-page arts and culture master plan. Egyptian Theatre January 2027 programming belongs on Park City Film’s live calendar, not a guess from here.

On the city-finance side, the Park Record’s July 18, 2026 story has City Manager Adam Lenhard calling FY27 “exceptionally strong,” with capital projects of about $235 million and nearly $56 million in the general fund. Mayor Dickey said the loss of Sundance will have some impact; he also named the Fox US Open of Mountain Biking (Deer Valley, September) and Snow League (January) as examples of “organic vibrancy.” He did not call either a Festival substitute.

Skip pinning March 2026 sales-tax drops on the Festival leaving. The Festival was still in town in January 2026. That story framed the weak numbers as a warm-winter effect.

What this means for your house

If you own on Main Street, Park Avenue, Swede Alley, or lower Old Town, FY27 city copy says Festival operations are over. That changes how you use the house in late January. Re-read city special-event guidance each season rather than rebuilding a 2027 street-closure map from last year’s Festival guide.

If you are comparing January 2027 travel to prior Festival years, Snow League is the only dated, named event on that old weekend that city and chamber leaders have publicly discussed — and it is a one-year commitment.
