Owner arrival week before Thanksgiving: lockbox, clean, grocery stage
Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26 this year. If you’re flying or driving in the week before — or the weekend prior — the question isn’t how your guests will move around town. It’s simpler: can you walk into a warm, stocked house on Wednesday afternoon, or are you still hunting for the lockbox code while the grocery line wraps around Kimball?
This is an owner open-up checklist for arrival week: access, clean, a quick systems glance, then grocery stage. It’s not a Thanksgiving lodging-and-traffic essay, not a Halloween weekend lock-and-leave / short-stay guest-ops map, and not a full winterization deep dive (pipes, vacancy heat strategy, long shut-downs). The house comes first; lift lines can wait.

Access before the flight
Confirm the lockbox, smart lock, garage keypad, and any HOA gate fob before you leave home. Text a trusted local contact a same-day walkthrough plan if the box fails — better a five-minute backup than a curb-side scramble with bags in the snow. Elevator keys, guest-parking stickers, and garage remotes live in association rules; verify yours against the CC&Rs for this building, not last year’s rental notes.
If possession or a closing overlaps arrival week, remember Utah REPC deadlines run on calendar days and don’t automatically pause for Thanksgiving unless the parties agree in writing. That’s a possession detail — not a reason to turn this post into an escrow calendar.
Clean and turnover the day before you land
When you can, schedule cleaners for the day before arrival so you’re walking into a finished house, not a turnover in progress. Leave trash day and recycling on the fridge so the first morning isn’t a scavenger hunt. Coordinate with your usual vendors; this isn’t a preferred-provider pitch — just timing that protects Wednesday afternoon.

Systems glance — not the full winterization checklist
Heat set point on. Water on. Hot water working. Fridge cold. Wi-Fi online. That’s the arrival-week glance so the house is usable the hour you walk in. Deep winterization — pipe protection, snowmelt plants, long lock-and-leave shut-downs — lives in earlier seasonal posts; don’t restitch that checklist here. If something feels off at the panel or the boiler, call your usual tech; don’t build a repair plan from a blog.
Park City Municipal snow ops already run Nov. 1–Apr. 30. That means driveway windrows, overnight parking rules on corridors like Main, Park Avenue, and Swede Alley (commonly 2 a.m.–6 a.m. in the city’s snow materials), and downhill-side patterns south of 12th Street on the guide. Re-open the snow removal guide the week you travel — street lists update.
On private streets, the association or POA often carries roadway-width clearing after qualifying storms. Know whether they clear the last stretch to your door or you do. That last twenty feet is where arrival week gets personal.
Grocery stage before Main Street holiday congestion
One basin run along the Kimball / Jeremy Ranch corridor for staples usually beats hunting specialty stops the afternoon before Thanksgiving. Nearer publish — and again the week you travel — reconfirm live store-locator hours for whichever banner you use; Thanksgiving week often shifts (Wednesday congestion, Thursday modified or closed depending on the chain). Don’t trust last year’s memory or an October screenshot. Specialty and Main Street stops can wait until you’re settled. Park City Mountain’s Nov. 20 target opening may or may not have spun by the time you arrive; arrival week is about the house, not first chair.

A simple arrival-week spine
- Access: lockbox / smart lock / garage / gate fob confirmed; local backup named.
- Clean: turnover finished the day before; trash and recycling notes on the fridge.
- Systems glance: heat, water, hot water, fridge, Wi-Fi.
- Plow reality: city priority street vs HOA private-road expectation.
- Grocery stage: one basin staples run before holiday congestion — hours reconfirmed week-of.
Keep private club calendars out of this checklist unless your deeded address actually uses that club’s gate. Clubs are not ski resorts, and a club fob is not a season pass.
Think of arrival week as the reverse of a lock-and-leave — you’re opening the house, not handing it to weekend guests. The same doors, remotes, and heat set points you trusted when you left are the ones that decide whether Wednesday feels like home or like a project. If you’re stacking opening weekend and Thanksgiving in one trip, protect the open-up sequence first — skiing is optional for this checklist; a working kitchen is not.
Owners who land Monday or Tuesday often get a quieter grocery run and a full day to notice what the house needs before guests or holiday cooks arrive. Owners who land Wednesday afternoon need every access and clean step finished in advance. Match the checklist to your wheels-down time, not to a generic “holiday week” blog.
If you want help reverse-engineering arrival week around your address — HOA access, plow expectation, and a realistic Wednesday walk-in — I’m glad to map it with you.
